How Fishing Rods Break

Most fishing rods are broken from abuse or accidental misuse. Often unseen damage goes undetected until breakage occurs. It is not uncommon for the consumer to believe it was due to a manufacturer’s defect. If the rod breaks from a manufacturer’s defect, 98% of the time it occurs under factory testing or the first time out on the water—not after hours, months, or years of use.

The rod tip, commonly the top ¼ of the rod blank, is not covered under our limited warranty program. Rod tips will not break under normal fishing conditions or when fighting a fish.  If you feel your rod has a manufacturer defect, all parts of the broken rod must be sent in for an in-depth examination. Our staff will examine the break and the overall condition of the rod to determine whether the issue was due to a factory defect.

Most Common Reasons for Accidental Rod Breakage

  • J-Hooking: Placing your hook in the hook keeper without loosening the drag or providing slack can pull the rod tip into a “J-Hook Bend.” This does not happen while fighting a fish, but it can occur when hoisting a fish with the rod pointed straight up.
  • High Sticking:Setting the hook with the rod pointed backward over the shoulder creates a severe J-Hook Bend in the upper third of the rod.
  • Overloading the Rod:Stressing the rod when snagged on a log, rock, or weeds while trying to pull the lure or bait free can cause unseen fractures that may result in the rod breaking under load.
  • Stepping on the Rod:This can cause stress fractures in the graphite, which may lead to rod failure under pressure, even if the rod had previously withstood that pressure.
  • Accidentally Hitting the Rod:Striking the rod against solid objects, like the gunnel of a boat, can bruise the rod blank and lead to stress fractures.
  • Rod Sleeve or Tube Pressure:Placing a rod in a sleeve or tube with the tip caught or jammed can cause tip breakage. Rod tips are not designed to be jammed.
  • Exceeding Lure or Line Ratings:Casting a lure heavier than the rod’s rating or using a line that exceeds its limit can stress the rod materials and cause failure.

Acme Tackle Company reserves the right to examine and inspect rods under warranty to determine the cause of failure.
